What battery is going into the slimmest Apple iPhone ever?

Listen to article

Apple is set to release the slimmest iPhone ever, the 17 Air, in the second half of this year. It’s definitely a breath of fresh air (pun intended) amongst a field of thick, all-in-one portable powerhouses available nowadays. It seems that there is a market for these as Samsung has jumped the gun with its own S25 Edge. This is all well and good, but making something more portable inevitably comes with some compromises – battery being one of the most affected. Well, here are the battery specifications for the iPhone 17 Air.

Measuring just Apple iPhone 17 Air is set to come with a 2,800 mAh battery installed. This is nearly half from the 4,685 mAh battery found in the iPhone 16 Pro Max. If you do the math, the 16 Pro Max has a mAh/mm ratio of 567, while the Air’s is slightly lower at around 509. We’re wishing for the capacity to be at least within the 3,100 mAh range to maintain the same ratio, but perhaps clever wizardry and AI/software optimization by Apple can offset this stark difference in capacity.

Just for reference, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge is just slightly thicker at 5.8mm but is able to cram in a 3,900 mAh power cell (for a ratio of 672).

Despite these facts, it goes without saying that the Apple iPhone 17 Air will be the thinnest iPhone ever. Even the compact iPhone 6 Plus from back in the day came in at 7.1mm (and the base 6 was still 6.9mm) with a capacity of 2,915 mAh. Hopefully, the thin design won’t cause any durability or bending issues.

This battery capacity isn’t final yet though. Speculations from the rumor mill suggest that Apple is testing out a new battery technology which could boost this by 15-20%. If the maximum theoretical 20% were achieved, then that would place the Air’s capacity at 3,360 mAh – definitely a more reassuring number for power users out there.

Other notable specifications include a 6.6-inch OLED display with ProMotion technology, a 48-megapixel camera sheltered in that eye-catching horizontal bar (Pixel, anyone?), and the Apple A19 chipset under the hood – paired with the brand’s proprietary C1 5G modem.

What do you think?
