Vestel announces BitTorrent TV

I thought this was bound to happen — Bittorent Inc and Vestel has announced a new TV that can directly download Bittorent files into the set. Obviously, it should be named Bittorent TV.

The idea is so simple I wonder why other more prominent TV brands incorporate this in their Smart TVs.

Vestel’s Bittorent TV allows for direct download and playback of files via P2P networks. So instead of having your PC or media player do that, downloading is done via a simple yet descriptive user-interface {via}.

Once this is out in the market though, I hoping other brands will follow suit. It’s possible firmware updates to Sony, LG or Samsung’s Smart TVs can easily do this with a storage device plugged into the set.

Looks like it uses the Bittorrent stock browser, which I assume only has free content available for it. Something along the lines of what’s available on Mininova these days (i.e. no copyrighted content).

There you go. “Artist-approved content”. i.e. freebies, short clips, teasers/promos, maybe movie trailers, etc.

If later on it’s hacked and custom firmware flashed in which allows direct connection to torrent search engines, it may be more useful that way. I’d still stick to full-fledged media PCs for that though. Easier to weed out the chaff.

this product shows that P2P is here to stay

on the contrary, this will only make P2P more restricted. the U.S. government is already taking action against copyright infringement through the internet.

this will only make the P2P issue hot(ter)

The movie industry will fall if we continue to patronize the torrenting system. I’d rather buy the original copy of movies to support the industry as a whole than to get free stuffs and watch their downfall.

you realize p2p sharing has been alive for years now? bittorrenttv targets tv episodes and other content designed for freeshare, that’s what i think is its main purpose. movies and other premium content is a whole different story, i think the people behind this technology know that already. in any case, there’s always utorrent for all that.

this will lead to copyright issues in the future. I think this product will be short lived…
