Two months ago, Yahoo! started giving its email users unlimited mailbox storage. Since then, the battle for the email storage got heated with the ante going on Yahoo’s side. I thought it was just a matter of time when Google would offer GMail users unlimited storage too or something close to what Yahoo! E-Mail is offering.

That hasn’t happened yet, but for those hungry for more mailbox space, how about a 250GB upgrade?

It’s a little weird to learn that while Yahoo! is offering unlimited storage totally free, Google is charging you for it. Yeah, I know, it’s a complete opposite of what people got used to. All along we thought Google’s model is free and ad-supported but in this case, Yahoo’s the one doing it and Google’s charging.

In time, this will all pan out and we’ll see who wins the battle for your beloved Inbox. If you remember, Google Answers (a paid service) shut down year ago then Yahoo! Answers took over that realm quite successfully (followed by LinkedIn).

Never looked back since I shifted to Gmail. Although Gmail’s labeling system is cool, I think having the option to create folders should also be added. In my case I use Thunderbird so I can create folders and sort incoming mail with filters.

Yahoo’s spam filter sucks. Gmail’s spam filter rocks! I never get spam mails in my inbox and whenever I get spam in the Spam box, the most I get per month is only 10.

Like Aja, I won’t be using my Gmail account for remote storage so I’m sure the current normal capacity is more than enough for emails.

And last but not least, if you have a Gmail account and use Firefox as your browser, you definitely should install the Greasemonkey and Better than Gmail add-ons. I read Google Reader feeds inside my Gmail account. :)

BTW, I think no one’s ever going to fill a single Yahoo! mailbox with more than 250GB of data unless they have a Gbps or faster Internet connection [if that even exists], since they’d upload and download files if they’re going to use it as a remote storage device. Don’t tell me they [Yahoo!] retained the 10MB or so limit per attachment, it just won’t work with an unlimited storage space scheme. All in all, I guess this is just a marketing strategy from Yahoo! to bring back lost customers to Google, or probably get a better number of sign ups in the future.

Thanks to Jhay I remember Gmail’s conversations. I guess it is just so natural to me seeing threads instead of individual messages that I tend to forget it is a unique feature. :P

I’d still go for Gmail, not withstanding the fact that I was never much of a Yahoo! user. The system works great, the labels are as Aja said, a stroke of genius add to the the labeling scheme. The conversation type handling of messages is cool plus you could get it work with your domain.

Yahoo! still beats googles 250GB’s storage… Yahoo is free, with google you have to pay pa. tsk tsk hehe.. I like gmail but for business e-mails yahoo will be better choice

Storage capacity aside, Gmail still rocks with a better spam protection than that of Yahoo!’s. And Gmail’s labeling system, compared to Yahoo!’s folders, is genius, IMO. I will probably never get to fill my 2-GB Gmail for my domain inbox in ten years with just mail, since I’m not going to treat my inbox as a remote storage device (for I’d eventually be downloading the files again anyway). I’d go stick with my beloved Gmail. :)
