Last Thursday, Google announced a new Mobile Java Application based for GMail. This mobile client can be downloaded and installed in a lot of supported handheld devices.
Gmail users can already access their accounts through the browser on their mobile devices, but this application brings users the same great Gmail experience — complete with search, conversation view, and automatic synchronization with the desktop version — with the following new benefits:
* Up to five times faster access and use, thanks to automatic pre-fetching of messages
* Drastically reduced clicks and scrolling to access email
* Fewer keystrokes for reading, composing, or searching mail
* Attachments, including files and photos, viewable and automatically resized to fit the user’s phone
I wanted to blog about it then but I was trying to access gmail.com/app to download the client on my Nokia 3230 but it seems my GPRS settings would not work. I tried downloading the new settings for SmartInternet/SmartGPRS today and was able to successfully install the Java app.

Yes, it’s faster indeed, and the interface is mobile-friendly. I’d usually get a notice to “use network to connect” which is kinda bug me for a while but checking and replying to emails is way easier than before. And, with Smart’s GPRS rate of Php10 per 30 minutes, this beats going to the net cafe to check your GMail.

Yup it’s nice. Tried it on N70.
Unfortunately it wasn’t my N70. They don’t support SE K700i !
i’ve been trying it on my k750i (globe postpaid account) since i read the announcement, but i can’t make it to work.
Were you able to download it? I read in techcrunch that K750i users could not get the app, either.
Having used the app on the N70, I suspect that they want models with a larger screen.
Migs, yes I was able to download and installed it on my K750i. But whenever I try accesing mobile gmail, it will load for a long time until it flashes the following message: “program requires data connection..”
Could be a Globe network problem.
Maybe it’s because Globe only allows certain addresses? I tested on Smart.
Globe postpaid will not work since it does not have the “Globe Internet” Access Point.
**Globe GPRS is an HTTP only access point.
Wow! A new milestone for Google. But I use Yahoo! Mail. I hope someday Yahoo will also distribute email application same with GMail Mobile Email.
I would think GMail Mobile uses HTTP… or maybe it’s HTTPS - does Globe support HTTPS?
it would be nice to try, but since Globe still charges 0.15 pesos per kB, I don’t like the prefetching thingy… :p that’s assuming i can install the app in my 128×128 screen phone in the first place.
GUrbi, there’s Yahoo! Go. Does it have email?
This app works on Nokia 7710.
I just downloaded it on my W810i and they definitely deliver on the Gmail ease-of-use claim.
I was all ready to send a brag message that I was e-mailing from my phone when. . . WHAT? No T9 predictive text? Strange.
Ah well. I tested a jpg attachment that opened without any problems, and a Word attachment that also did just fine. Impressive.
Between this and Google Maps Mobile, I’m feeling very well equiped with my phone.
Ok, I was able to run it on my k750i, Globe postpaid account after changing a data communication setting. Unfortunately, I forgot which one I changed.
Is it possible to have an e-mail account on my mobile? I am in Mozambique and my mobile number is +258847246670
I tried to use Gmail application on my N70 using SmartInternet/SmartGPRS, but why i always get the error message : “network unavailable. This program requires a data connection”
meanwhile, I have no problem browsing with smartinternet/gprs.
anybody can tell me what to do? maybe the settings? access point name?
thanks in advance….
works fine with w800i!!!
All,
I’ve been pulling teeth trying to get gmail to work with my phone (Z50i). I’m on Globe postpaid and it seems that there is something wrong: used all the setting I could find in all the different websites (including Globe’s) and I can’t do anything GPRS + HTTPS. Even some other apps requiring GPRS doesn’t seem to work.
I went to Globe in Megamall and, after much wrangling , they insisted:
Sir, WAP at GPRS iisa lang yan.
Peste.
Any help?
Benito
benito - check your Java Settings…select myGlobe Internet instead. that’s what I did to my k750i .
I had a problem with my V800 I got a “certificate not valid” error. I am using Movamail http://movamail.com/ for 3 month and I never had problems. Should I use Gmail mobile?
For those who gets “this program requires a data connection” error message! I got this message even though I can browse web sites with the browser through GPRS. I have Nokia 6020… the solution was to add Access Point with settings of your mobile provider and Gmail Mobile worked fine.
@spritable:
what do you mean by adding access point?
i’m smart postpaid and the access point i’m using is smartgprs..should i add another one?

I am a postpaid subscriber with Globe and has been enjoying GMail for mobile for sometime now. The setting I use, which works for most of the apps on my phones, is Globe INet. On getting the app, you have to download it from http://gmail.com/app from your in-built browser. That way, GMail can detect whether your phone is compatible or not. If it is compatible and you were able to download the app but are not able to connect, just go to the nearest Globe business center or call their CS line. One thing I don’t get to enjoy yet is Yahoo! Go, which is not compatible to both my phones.
Both Globe and Smart sim cards must be activated for “Internet”. For Globe, make sure your card is activated for “Inet” (prepaid), or “internet” (postpaid). Ring the customer service (211) to activate. Many older sim cards are not activated. You may have gprs/wap, but need “packet date” switched on for true, fast browsing. Gmail app working great on my e61i, which I am using to make this post with.
