Nokia 5800 Unboxing & First Impressions

Hello! Are you a Nokia 5800 XpressMusic owner? Please take the quick survey here!

So, I returned back to the Nokia Store after the line has thinned and bought a unit to review. Will need a couple more days to cook up a full review but here are my first impressions and some more unboxing photos of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. Update: Read our full Nokia 5800 Review.

What’s inside the box? The Nokia 5800 phone, a stylus (+1 extra), the guitar pick (plectrum, works as a stylus too), charger, microUSB cable, TV out cables, headphone + handsfree, hardshell rubber casing, phone stand, and CD installer.

The presence of the stylus and the guitar pick stresses the need to use them instead of your finger. The phone is a little bulky but feels light for its size and the screen size isn’t as large a real-estate as expected (same as the Xperia X1).

The 5800 is not Nokia’s first full touchscreen phone. They had the Nokia 7710 back in 2003 but was discontinued. Since then, Nokia had 5 years to fix and perfect their touch screen platform and UI so my final review will put some focus on this. Likewise, as a member of the XpressMusic line, the Nokia 5800 is expected to rate high on the multimedia side.

So far, I’m not very impressed (for one, the microUSB port is busted and cannot be detected by the PC). Expect the full review of the Nokia 5800 within the week.

I have a feeling that clerks in the other Nokia stores are just removing the music coupons from the boxes. Oh, and they actually wanted 1000p more in Glorietta than the announced 19900p price. Mind-blowing to say the least.

Hmmm, initially I thought the staffs at the other Nokia Stores are just plain stupid compare to the staffs at the Nokia Store at Global City. But then probably you’re right. Some of these people are just removing the music coupons. It’s really quite illogical that some 5800 will not have the coupons and others have (Well, if this was a 3rd party store at Greenhills then I wouldn’t be suprised, but this is Nokia!).

On the other hand, the staffs at the Globaly City told me that the price of 5800 will remain at PHP 19,990 even after the launch date and the price is same for all Nokia Stores around the Philippines. But so far, the one in Glorietta, just as you wrote, has a different price. The Nokia Store at Cyberzone, SM North sells the 5800 for PHP 20,400.

I have only one conclusion here. If you wanna buy the 5800, buy it at the Nokia Store at Global City. They sell the cheapest 5800 and provides good support service (Well, in most cases).

bought mine at moa last january 10 for 20800. unfortunately, the freebies were not included in the phone. no activation voucher for the 450 songs at the same there are only 9 preloaded songs and 2 videos. return it to moa,

    No freebies? That’s weird.

I would like to know for those who have the 5800 if you have the Kwjan’s VIDEOs or Kwjan’s AUDIOs. Which one is really included on the package?

@Flamark – the “funny thing” was the look on the clerk’s face in the Glorietta store when I asked about the music coupon. He froze up for a couple seconds and then gave the “none of the blue models have the music coupon” statement. It’s pretty low that they are doing this at official Nokia stores, most ppl won’t even know that they are missing something valuable from the retail box.

    @Bruce, flamark and the rest:

The Nokia Store in Boni High Street was the official launching pad of the 5800. I reckon the staff there had undergone additional CSR and tech training specific to the phone which is why the high level of service.

I got a Nokia 5800 Xpress Music at the launch in Bonifacio High Street last January 10, 2009 (Saturday, which coincidentally was my birthday). I was there as early as 8AM so I was included in the first 58 and received the free SennHeiser headset. The unit was a red one version 11 firmware.
Upon demo of the unit, we already experienced a problem upon refreshing the music library which took more than 30 minutes to complete, while the other owners I was with took merely 3 minutes for their units to finish. After further waiting, I was referred to the product manager for marketing, Ms. Corrine Risos. Since the store was quite busy then, she gave me her number so that if I would have further problems with the library I could call on her.
The unit was fine until Sunday evening when I noticed the sudden drops in volume when making calls and the music library kept continuously refreshing but wasn’t adding any files. I asked Nokia Care Greenbelt if they were aware of the earpiece problem and if the technical team can take a look at it. The staff answered that they are not yet aware of the earpiece problem since this was a new phone.
I then called up Ms. Corrine Risos Monday morning and met with her and the head engineer Brian Lee at the Nokia Philippines office in Makati. Apparently they were not aware of the earpiece bug problem, which was reported in forums from countries who had earlier launches. After showing them the problem with my unit, they asked if they could borrow it for diagnosis. Knowing that it was a quick fix based on the Youtube solutions, it took them longer to resolve the problem. Anyway, I waited until 7PM the next day but to no avail. I was informed that they fixed the earpiece bug but they were having problems with the refresh music library function.
Since I was at the Bonifacio High Street area, I went in the store and asked the store manager Ms. Bess about their policy regarding refunds, she said none “WALA KASI ELECTRONICS ETO” (None because these are electronic devices) and that Nokia care would either repair or place the item pending diagnosis but definitely NO REFUNDS.
Come Wednesday afternoon I was informed that the unit was fixed and the messenger was to deliver the unit around 6-7 pm at our house. When it arrived, I tried turning it on but wouldn’t so naturally I thought that the battery might be discharged, but after charging for an hour the charging lights wasn’t turning on.
I called Ms. Risos again but according to her, the unit was functioning prior to sending and that even tried turning it on and off but had no problems. She promised to elevate my case to the Nokia Care which was the usual protocol. So this morning she informed me that someone would call me regarding my case. I tried my luck and tried to call Engr. Bryan Lee since he was from Nokia Care. He was informed by Ms. Risos of my problem and that I wanted a refund. He informed me that the usual case would be replacement but since it was a special case he arranged the refund at the Nokia Store at the Bonifacio High Street. But what further frustrated me was that I had to return the Sennheiser headset and other freebies, which I believed I was entitled to since I was in line at 8AM to claim those items upon purchase for free. And what about the effort and time I spent to get this unit and all the birthday greetings I received and videos which were on the phone when it was still functioning? Yes I have my money back but could I charge you back for those which I lost due to a faulty unit?

I waited so long for this phone and I really wanted it in lieu of getting an iPhone. What made me consider a refund instead of a replacement was that I had no assurance that the replacement units would be free of any malfunction. I know several owners who purchased the same units that day at the same store having similar problems and still waiting for a response from Nokia Care. Could it be that Nokia Care really doesn’t really care for its customers?

Bought mine last saturday jan 10 at bonifacio highstreet, returned it the next day because the wifi feature isnt working. I had to wait for the store manager to get in so shed can decide if she is gonna replace the my phone ( I waited for 1hr). unit was replaced that day. The manager told me that if i get another defective phone I have to take it to Nokia Care.
I am using bluetooth headset to make calls so i did not realize that the 2nd unit’s earpiece was also defective not until wednesay. returned the 2ND DEFECTIVE unit to Nokia Care MOA. I demanded for another replacement or refund for the reason that NOKIA is selling defective phones. I even talked to the manager and she politely replied to me “we are a repair center, we dont do replacements or refunds”. I had no choice but to leave my phone there and wait for 1 week to see if they can fix the problem. I paid for a price of a brand new phone and they gave me defective phones twice. And after they repair it, its like getting a refurbished phone for the price of a brand new phone. Nokia, I want my money back.

  9. ria says:

So far, I haven’t had any major problems with my phone. I was disappointed, though, that the Kjwan songs were not loaded. I also had a minor scare just this past Friday. The songs would play, but you couldn’t hear the sound; you had to adjust the volume to be able to hear the sound, and this happened for every song I played. I turned the unit off, waited a few minutes, then turned it on again, and the player was back to normal.

The USB cable was working fine with my laptop. I use a MacBook. I downloaded software from the Nokia Europe website to allow me to download music from my itunes and into my phone. It leaves much to be desired, but it works.

  10. marlon says:

the one i bought is the blue one. no music coupon unlike the red one that my wife bought. i also notice flickering of the screen when some applications are being performed. Some stores really sell it a higher price, nokia mall of asia sells it 20800.Previously i had a problem opening email attachments (ms word) so i downloaded the free quickoffice included in the phone. still was unable to download email attachments. i was informed that i have to first go to yahoo.com and then mail rather than directly to yahoomail.com.

    @Incus:
Can you give us the contact number of Ms. Corrine Risos or Brian Lee? I would also like to have a refund (others ay want too). I just got my 5800 repaired from MOA yesterday. Today I’m returning it again to them for another issue.

  14. marlon says:

went back to nokia moa for the activation code since the phone unit that was given to me does not have the activation code for the free music downloads. i was informed that they will provide to me a new memory card since it seems that the blue version of the phone memory card was not provided with the free loaded songs and videos as well as the activation code. it is the reason why it has no icon for nokia music. at the same time, the software for the blue phone that was installed was version 10 unlike that in the red version of the phone na version 11 na. so it has to be updated in order to remove the flickering or glitch when opening an icon. fyi

after that.. ok na naman daw..

bout naman sa earpiece problem… may solution na daw…. kadalasan talaga mabibili ay yun ang problema… try this site to enhance your idea..

Oh well, there’s other people who says their units are ok,might still consider on buying one. :)

Need help guys, if I will still pursue this lemon, what do you think should I check while on the store? I have this tendency to be overwhelmed once I have the unit on my hand thus, can no longer check other functionality. Thanks.
