The recent April 2008 traffic report from mobile advertising company AdMob reveals that the Philippines is ranked among the top 10 countries with highest traffic for the mobile web.

Since the short announcement by Globe yesterday, it’s been the talk of the town already. Most of the tech journalists I talked to yesterday and today tell me this may not be a game-changer for Globe and I tend to agree with them.
An email just this afternoon pointed me to the press release that Globe Telecom has agreed with Apple to exclusively offer the iPhone in the Philippines. Announcement was made at 1PM this afternoon.
Globe 3G may be facing some serious issues this month due to frequent disconnection charges on their 5 Peso per 15 minute rates. Last month, Globe introduced time-based charging on top of the previous kilobyte rates — a pleasant development to loyal Globe subscribers. Problem though is the arbitrary disconnection/reconnection charges.

This just in. Got a message from someone inside Globe telling me Globe GPRS/3G/HSDPA (myGlobe GPRS and myGlobe Internet on your mobile phone settings) has moved to time-based charging. That’s 5 pesos for every 15 minutes! It’s about time.
When the guys from Globe Innove gave me a free WiZ (Wireless Internet Zone) account, I retorted that they didn’t have any list of hotspots posted on their website (not even on that login page you see when you’re hooked up with one of them wifi access points).
They shot me an email with the complete list below. (This one hasn’t been updated since December 10, 2005!)

Just read from the newspaper this afternoon that Globe Telecoms will be permanently offering unlimited NDD calls from Globe landlines to any number in their network (fixed lines, mobiles phones TNT, G, etc.). That beats PLDT’s unlimited Php10/call any day.
The Globe PostPaid Plus package also includes unlimited internet access to GlobeQUEST Dial. All that for a fixed price of Php750 per month. Regular landline subscribers will need to upgrade to this service plan while new subscribers are automatically upgraded.
I forgot the rest of the details but if you’re interested, you can call them at (02) 79SUPRT (797.87.78) if you’re in Metro Manila or 1800-8-79SUPRT (1800-8-7978778), toll-free from your Globelines or Handyphone.
Their website for dial-up subscribers isn’t updated with this info though.

Globe’s broadband subsidiary Innove Communications has partnered with Intel to test out WiMAX for residents in Trece Martirez, Cavite. Trials for WiMax will be done by selected employees of Intel in Cavite. testing will be done in about 3 months and once this has been deemed viable, Globe might offer the service in Metro Manila in as early as 2007.
In a news article published in Manila Bulletin here:
The second-generation CPEs, which will be indoor self-installable modems similar to a cable or DSL modem and will be priced around $250, are expected to be available in early 2007. Eventually, CPEs will be integrated in laptops which should become available in 2007-08, while cellphones with CPEs inside should come out in 2008-09.
Sounds pretty exciting to me. We should be able to get some competition for Smart WiFi with this, but WiMax is in a much better position to provide high-speed and reliable broadband internet in the country.
Got home this evening to find pamphlets at my doorstep from Globe. Apparently they are now offering broadband connections to residential areas with speeds of up to 2Mbps. Sweet.
Here are the DSL rates and prices:
*GenTxt Express Unlimited
Monthly Fee: Php995
DSL Speed: 384kbps
Express Unlimited
Monthly Fee: Php1,495 (promo price of Php995 just now)
DSL Speed: 384kbps
Explore Silver
Monthly Fee: Php1,995
DSL Speed: 768kbps
Explore Gold
Monthly Fee: Php2,995
DSL Speed: 2Mbps
* I think the GenTxt plan is for students. Not sure about it but looks very similar to the PLDT DSL student rate before (Plan 998 or something). And read this — a Globelines landline subscription is NOT a prerequisite to Globelines broadband.
The 2Mbps under Explore Gold plan did took most of my attention. Really, really nice to have something like that at home all by myself. And to think that only last year, I was paying GreenDot Php2,750 for a mere 256kbps connection.
