One of the contenders in this year’s TechCrunch50 Conference is FitBit, a device that melds fitness and social networking into one tiny motion sensing pedometer you clip and carry around.
The Fitbit, once activated and attached to you, can track any 3-dimensional movement you made as it has this motion sensor similarly found on the Nintendo Wii.
It can track almost any movement — the Tracker measures the intensity and duration of your physical activities, calories burned, steps taken, distance traveled, how long it took you to fall asleep, the number of times you woke up throughout the night and how long you were actually asleep vs. just lying in bed.
It’s as wearable and lightweight as an iPod Shuffle so you can bring it anywhere everyday without being bothered. They have a website where you can open an account and upload all your historical data. There you can share and compare stats with friends and other Fitbit users.
Syncing is done wirelessly using a small base station you hook into your PC or laptop and the device can last 10 days or more on a single charge. Fit for calorie-counters, the Fitbit will be available by December for $99. It’s very seldom you’d see something like this would come out of a TechCrunch50 conference (most of the time it’s just a social networking website).
