I grew up with the country-side tradition of having a bamboo bazooka to celebrate with every Christmas and New Year. This year, I’m seeing more and more high-tech boom bazookas out in the streets — and very creative ones if I might add.
Materials: PVC pipes, screw cap, toy gun, stove lighter, spray paint, glue gun, electric wires, shoulder strap
For charging: kerosene or denatured alcohol + spray bottle (avoid gasoline!)
This baby packs a bang as loud as any commercial firecrackers you can buy around. The stove lighter is cut off and fitted inside the toy guy which serves as a trigger.
Just unscrew the cap at the base, spray in 2 to 3 squirts of kerosene or alcohol, screw back the cap, swirl for a couple of seconds and hit the trigger.

This is the reason why I think New Year would be celebrated in a shorter time compared back to when firecrackers where still the trend and cheap!
Firecrackers are illegal here in Davao
But I just watched on the news that they’re gonna ban these improvised cannons soon.

I hate those PVC bogas (what they call them here). They make me and my PC jump!
Some kids here got 2nd degree facial burns because of them. Usually because they forget to screw the cap tight enough.
I just bought one kanina. Cost me PHP300. The large ones cost PHP500.
We used to make one out of softdrink cans. About 7 of these cans can make a nice bazooka.

As an American married into the Philippines all may of course feel free to ignore my comments. But this post and some of the comments make me feel sad indeed.
The Philippines must be a world leader in the category of people, especially children burned and maimed for life by fireworks and these abominable, dangerous so-called toys. Sad indeed the idea of children being given toys that cause facial burns coupled with other “haha” comments.
In most ways I have found my Filipino relatives and friends to be among the most intelligent and caring folks on the face of the earth. But I will forever be mystified by this incredible blind spot that equates the killing and maiming of children (and adults) with the fun-filled ‘tradition’ of noise-making.
Are children so ‘cheap to manufacture’ that otherwise caring folks just don’t give a damn?
