Yahoo: Wanna be a Social Media Producer?

Yahoo! is setting the bar for who is qualified to be called a Social Media Expert and they’re putting a figure on the number of connections you need to have. Check out the list below if you qualify.

Here’s the checklist:

  • 3 to 5 years editorial experience (includes blogging)
  • Minimum 400 friends on Facebook
  • Minimum 300 followers in Twitter
  • Minimum 200 connections in LinkedIn

Looks like a reasonable criteria which means you need to be a bit popular among social media sites to qualify (I wonder why they didn’t include Friendster). If you asked me, the hardest number to achieve is LinkedIn.

Contact Ederic if you think you have the numbers.

Wow first time I see something like this. Now online contacts are requirements to get jobs? Anyway, sounds reasonable if its a Social Media Expert they’re looking for.

Never thought Yahoo was somewhat of an advocate of standards nor do I believe or question their credentials in dictating what and how should anyone be qualified as a Social Media Expert. It’s not like they invented it. I think there is more to it than the numbers being presented by Yahoo to become a Social Media Expert. Anyone could get those numbers and still be considered a social deviant.

wow, that’s great. yeah, i think most FB and Twitter fanatics are still not familiar with LinkedIn.

      Hi Abe,

Just wanted to share my thoughts on this:

      (1) Nobody is a social media *expert* – It’s almost laughable. Like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKCdexz5RQ8

      (2) And nobody gets to be an “expert” by collecting connections on FB, LI, and TW. Having those connections mean nothing when there is no substance.

Perhaps Yahoo! ought to look beyond the numbers. It’s not always a number game. ;)

      Cheers
