Nikon Coolpix A with APS-C sensor announced

Nikon has recently announced a new camera aimed at professional photographers who want a compact shooter, the Coolpix A – Nikon’s first APS-C sensor compact camera.

What Nikon has done here is they took a point-and-shoot body then equipped it with a DX-format CMOS sensor which are found in some of Nikon’s own DSLRs. So what you’re expected to get from the Coolpix A are rendering capabilities that Nikon claims to be comparable to those of DSLRs plus the advantages of having a compact body.

Continuous shooting of up to 4 fps and full-HD video recording function. All of that in a magnesium alloy body that is 110.0 mm wide, 64.3 mm high and 40.3 mm deep.

Heard at Nikon headquarters, 9 months ago :

employee: Boss! Sony is killing us with their RX100 enthusiast camera!
boss: Not to worry shinto-san. Use a Sony-like sensor, Sony specs, and double the Sony price. Dress up the camera to make it look “rugged”. As a cost savings measure, include a 28mm lens like Sony, we’ll just omit the zoom. We shall say that focus is always more valuable than zoom! We shall destroy them with our products, as we are Nikon. There is no other!
employee: Oh Boss! We love you so much …
