Google Maps rolls out ‘Know before you go’ section using AI, EV charger predictions, and more

Listen to article

Google announced several new updates to Google Maps, introducing features like AI-powered tips, trending places, and better information for electric vehicle (EV) drivers.

Looking for a place to visit? There’s now a new “Know Before You Go” section that uses Google’s Gemini AI to show useful tips. It pulls up information from user reviews and/ or online sources, providing tips such as how to book reservations, where to park, or even secret menu items.

There’s something useful for EV owners too. While Google Maps already shows if EV chargers are available in real time, the update will be able to predict how many chargers will be free by the they arrive at a charging station.

This is based on AI analysis of past and current charger use, helping users avoid waiting in line.

The Explore tab also got an update, now showing trending and popular restaurants, activities, and attractions nearby. Users can swipe up to see curated lists from trusted sites, making it easier to find local favorites.

Google also added an option to share reviews anonymously using a nickname and a different profile picture instead of real name.

The Gemini AI tips feature is available in the US for now on Android and iOS. While the updated Explore tab and anonymous reviews will roll out this month. EV charger availability predictions will be available next week on Android Auto and cars with Google built-in worldwide.
