The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is urging Congress to study the impact of violent video games on Filipino youth following the recent school shooting in Tacloban City. During a press conference, DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla said games that depict extreme violence, such as Gorebox, should be reviewed and potentially banned.
The call comes after a shooting where two teenage suspects left three students dead and several others injured. Based on what the DILG said, a longer exposure to graphic violent content could nudge young people’s behavior and gradually make them less sensitive to violence, like kinda numb them.
The agency also noted it wants to cooperate with lawmakers and other sectors, maybe even align with different groups to look into regulations that will protect minors, while still encouraging a safer digital space.
