Samsung extending One UI to smart home appliances

Listen to article

Samsung announced that they are expanding One UI coverage to its entire lineup of smart home appliances, including washing machines and refrigerators. The move aims to unify Samsung’s ecosystem and provide a consistent user experience across devices, similar to Huawei’s HarmonyOS.

Wi-Fi-enabled appliances launched in 2024 will receive up to 7 years of software updates. One UI features from smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches will be brought to kitchen appliances.

This includes apps like Bixby, Gallery, and Samsung TV Plus. SmartThings integration is also slated to improve connectivity between products. For those wondering how this will work with appliances, we’ll break it down below.

One UI 7’s Now Brief feature will deliver personalized and contextual information, such as weather forecasts, family schedules, and home insights. This applies to refrigerators with Family Hub and 9-inch screens.

Further, they will receive AI Vision Inside, which recognizes commonly used packaged food. As for Bixby, it’s purpose is mainly for supporting Voice ID to identify user voices along with a personalized experience.

Notably though, washing machines require a 7-inch screen to use One UI features. Similarly, refrigerators must support Family Hub as well.

Collectively, supported appliances will have security improvements with Samsung Knox and Trust Chain. The latter is a blockchain-based system used for monitoring devices to ensure security and safe connections.

The company also announced that Samsung TV Plus will also expand to Canada, Brazil, and India.
