Emirates has cheapest in-flight WiFi at $1 per 500MB

I seldom fly Emirates, perhaps one or twice a year, so I don’t get first hand information about their in-flight WiFi service very often. I like flying Delta because they usually have a flat rate fee for the entire flight (Manila to US) for under $20 which isn’t bad.

Emirates is one of the very few airlines that offer some sort of in-flight internet service (along with PAL, Singapore Air and Delta) and during our trip here to Europe, I discovered they’re offering much cheaper internet service during the flight.

Yes, that’s Php50 for 500MB of usage. If you’re just on mobile, this is more than enough for the casual messaging and social media use. On a laptop, you can still do a lot of work with 500MB. Or, you can just top up again for another Php50 if you run out of allocation.

In fact, you can actually sign up for a free trial worth 10MB (unique to an email account per session). This is a pretty good service already, the cheapest one I’ve tried so far.

There’s only one drawback though — the service is so cheap a lot of people in the flight was using it. There were about 55 concurrent users during our 2nd leg of the trip from Dubai to Prague and the internet speed really slowed down (less than 200Kbps from the usual 0.5Mbps to 2Mbps).
