GCash has partnered with government agencies to launch digital payment options for the MRT-3 line. Joining the company for the initiative is the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).

The launch supports the DOTr’s Philippine National Standard for Automated Fare Collection Systems, lessening the need for single journey tickets. This allows passengers to tap in and out of MRT-3 using QR codes, NFC, and debit or credit cards.
To use the new system, commuters can simply open the GCash app. From here, tap the Commute icon, generate a QR code, and scan it at the turnstiles to enter and exit stations.
Android users can also use the Tap-to-Pay NFC feature. GCash cards, Visa, Mastercard, and Landbank prepaid cards are also supported at select turnstiles.
The pilot rollout was held at MRT-3’s One Ayala Station, attended by key officials. This included DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon, BSP Monetary Board Member Walter Wassmer, DICT Secretary Henry Aguda, Landbank President Lynette Ortiz, and GCash CEO Martha Sazon.
Dizon said this is just the beginning, planning to expand digital fare collection to LRT-1, LRT-2, and other transport lines. The DICT is also working on improving internet access inside stations and trains to ensure smooth mobile transactions.
The DOTr and its partners are also taking note of feedback from users to improve the system. GCash users can learn more by opening the app and tapping the Commute button.
