Meta joins YouTube in crackdown on unoriginal content and AI ‘slop’

Listen to article

Meta has announced a new policy targeting unoriginal content and AI slop, notably on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. The move aligns with YouTube’s monetization crackdown on repetitive or mass-produced videos.

‘Too often the same meme or video pops up repeatedly,’ said Meta in their announcement. ‘It dulls the experience for all and makes it harder for fresh voices to break through,’ they added.

Offending accounts will face reduced distribution and temporary demonetization, with some repeat reposts being suppressed entirely. The policy targets uploads that reuse text, images, or videos without meaningful additions.

Meta cautions creators to avoid ‘stitching together clips’ or slapping on a watermark to claim reposted content. The company is pushing for more ‘authentic storytelling’ instead.

As mentioned, the policy echoes YouTube’s updated guidelines that were made effective on July 15, 2025. As a result, creators of AI-generated or low effort videos that ignore the requirements for originality are under fire.

YouTube clarified its update is a policy refinement, not a ban on AI-enhanced content, so long as it meets authenticity standards. Meta reports it has already removed 10 million impersonator accounts and 500,000 content-farming profiles this year.

The company may also test a feature that links back to original creators when content is duplicated. These actions reflect a broader tech industry shift.

As AI tools make it easier to produce low-value content en masse, platforms like Meta and YouTube are prioritizing original storytelling and promoting creators who add real value to their audiences.
