NBI warns public against fake charity donation scams

Listen to article

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is warning the public about fake charity scams that ask for donations or sponsorships.

The NBI reports that various groups use fake identities which mimic actual NGOs, government entities, and famous individuals to deceive people into sending them money. Through caller ID spoofing, they create fake phone numbers which appear to be authentic.

The NBI identified three common warning signs, which include unexpected messages that inform recipients about their selection to donate, urgent requests for immediate payment, and demands for fund transfer to personal accounts instead of official accounts.

The agency reminded everyone to verify first before giving. People should contact the real organization using trusted phone numbers and ask for official documents. People who suspect they have fallen victim to the scam can report their case to the NBI Cybercrime Division.
