The Philippines’ broadband and mobile speed continue to improve for February 2021, according to the recent Speedtest Global Index by Ookla. The country currently ranks 83rd on mobile and 92nd in fixed broadband globally.
The test for February 2021 found that the Philippines increased three spots on the global ranking for mobile internet. The average mobile download speed for February was recorded at 26.24 Mbps. This is higher than last January 2021 at 25.77Mbps. The upload speed and latency are also higher at 6.42 Mbps and 31 ms, respectively. The Philippines now ranks 83rd from 86th.
For its fixed broadband category, the Philippines now ranks 92nd from the previous rank of 100th. Based on the data, the Philippines’ average fixed broadband download speed rose to 38.46 Mbps from 32.73 Mbps in January 2021. It has recorded an upload speed of 36.96 Mbps and latency of 23 ms.
The Philippines has been making improvements. These improvements are believed to be the results of the telco industry’s sustained investments in network infrastructure development.
However, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) stated that they have been working with other agencies to advance requirements that support telcos with cellular towers’ deployment. Due to this, there has been a significant increase in cellular towers from July 2020 to January 2021, totaling 3,211 new towers.
Furthermore, DICT and the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) closely monitor telcos’ progress concerning their submitted rollout plans for 2021.
