PC market grows 15% in 2021

According to the latest report from Canalys, PC shipments for the year 2021 increased by 15% compared to 2020.

PC shipments during the year grew globally, reaching 341 million units sold. This is an increase in a market where experts were expecting a drop in sales due to the ongoing global chip shortage.

“2021 was a watershed year in the history of the PC market, with the PC’s place at the center of work, learning and leisure truly cemented,” said Ishan Dutt, Senior Analyst at Canalys. “For the market to post double-digit growth over an impressive 2020, despite the constant cloud of supply constraints, speaks volumes about how strong PC demand has been over the last 12 months.

Lenovo is the leading brand for the year with a 24.1% market share, while HP is in second with a 21.7% market share. Dell and Apple are third and fourth respectively.

Apple though had the largest growth year-on-year at 28.3%, while second place Acer had 21.8% growth.

The growth is significant despite shipments only growing 1% during the fourth quarter of 2021. Global PC market revenues are up 11% to USD 70 billion, while the full-year revenue rose 15% to USD 250 billion in 2021.
