vivo announces its own mixed reality headset: vivo Vision Explorer Edition

vivo has officially announced its first mixed reality (MR) headset, the Vision Explorer Edition, during its 30th anniversary event in Dongguan, China.

With this launch, vivo becomes the first Chinese smartphone manufacturer to release an MR device, positioning it as a direct competitor to Apple’s Vision Pro.

The Vision Explorer Edition has a compact and lightweight build, weighing 398 grams and measuring 83mm in height with a thickness of 40mm. It sports a mirror-finish front visor packed with cameras and sensors for tracking.

Users can swap between four light-blocking shields with foam padding for comfort, and the headset ships with two different straps: one aimed at comfort and another for stability.

The design does share some resemblance with Apple’s Vision Pro, though vivo has tailored it with its own adjustments.

For visuals, the headset comes with dual 8K micro-OLED binocular displays, each offering 3840 x 3552 resolution. The panels support 94% of the DCI-P3 color gamut and diopter adjustment through magnetic lenses, making it accessible for users who need vision correction. vivo says the headset delivers a 180-degree view, spatial audio, and the equivalent of a 120-inch virtual screen for media consumption.

Powering the device is the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip paired with vivo’s OriginOS Vision, which introduces natural navigation through precise eye-tracking and advanced hand gesture recognition.

The system also supports full color passthrough with just 13ms latency, spatial video playback, and compatibility with MR and PCVR gaming titles. To help manage power, vivo has included its own Blue Ocean power management system, which is said to extend battery life during use.

To give users a first look, vivo has set up 12 experience zones across China where the headset can be tested.
