Apple has taken a significant step forward in mobile music production with the new Voice Memos update, exclusive to the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
The feature, known as Layered Recordings, allows users to record vocals over instrumental tracks directly through their devices—no headphones or studio setup required.
With the power of the A18 Pro chip and iOS 18.2, Layered Recordings uses advanced machine learning to isolate vocals from background instrumentals, creating two separate tracks.
This means users can seamlessly mix and refine their recordings in professional software like Logic Pro.
Whether you’re layering acoustic guitar or a piano instrumental, Voice Memos now acts as a mobile studio, syncing recordings across iPhone, iPad, and Mac for further production.

This update isn’t just for casual users. GRAMMY Award winners Michael Bublé, Carly Pearce, and producer Greg Wells recently utilized the feature to create their holiday track, Maybe This Christmas.
Recorded entirely on the iPhone 16 Pro, the song showcases how Apple’s Layered Recordings can transform inspiration into polished music, anytime and anywhere.
“I don’t think people realize the critical role Voice Memos on iPhone plays in the creation process for musicians,” shared Michael Bublé.
“With Layered Recordings, the limitations of a traditional studio turn into creative freedom”
For professionals, the ability to transfer Layered Recordings directly into Logic Pro sessions is a game-changer.
Producers can send compressed instrumentals to Voice Memos, enabling vocalists to record layers without missing a beat.
Once the vocals are captured, the recordings sync back to Logic Pro on Mac or iPad for fine-tuning.
The Layered Recordings feature is live for iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max users running iOS 18.2. Logic Pro users with macOS Sequoia 15.2 or iPadOS 18.2 can import and edit Layered Recordings.
