Intel outs X-series CPUs w/ 18-core Core i9 chip

Over at the ongoing Computex 2017, Intel has announced its new Core X-series processor family and an entirely new Intel Core i9 processor aimed at enthusiasts. Included in this line is the Intel Core i9 Extreme Edition which touts a whopping 18 cores.

According to Intel, mostly those who demand multitasking capabilities like gamers or content creators are whom these chips are targetted at — whether they’re editing a video, animating, composing a song, or are playing in the highest resolution possible. The product lineup is as follows together with its price, the corresponding number of cores, and threads:

  • Core i5-7640X ($242) – 4 cores and 4 threads
  • Core i7-7740X ($339) – 4 cores and 8 threads
  • Core i7-7800X ($389) – 6 cores and 12 threads
  • Core i7 7820X ($599) – 8 cores and 16 threads
  • Core i9-7900X ($999) – 10 cores and 20 threads
  • Core i9-7920X ($1,199) – 12 cores and 24 threads
  • Core i9-7940X ($1,399) – 14 cores and 28 threads
  • Core i9-7960X ($1,399) – 16 cores and 32 threads
  • Core i9-7980X Extreme ($1,999) – 18 cores and 36 threads

Apart from the first two offerings (4 cores and 4/8 threads) which are built on Kaby Lake X,  it’s important to note that all the entries are built on Skylake X.

All these 9 desktop processors are very much compatible to work with Intel’s new X299 motherboard chipset which is reportedly coming out very soon.

Dang that i5 with only 4Core 4 Threads better get Ryzen 1600 at that price with 6 Core 12 Threads already

Are these backward compatible with X99 boards? I just bought a Gigabyte X99m board and a Xeon ES. I would like to upgrade to these procs but can they still work on LGA2011-3?
