Android could finally feature its own Desktop Mode very soon

Listen to article

Google is reportedly working on a new feature for Android that could bring a desktop-like experience to your phone.

Currently, Samsung’s DeX mode is the only Android solution offering a polished desktop interface, but Google’s upcoming Desktop Mode aims to change that.

According to a report from Android Authority, the feature is being developed for Pixel devices and will allow users to connect their phones to an external display.

Although, the feature will initially be available inside Developer options until it’s fully stable.

The Pixel’s Desktop Mode will include a taskbar, and swiping down from the top will show expanded Quick Settings, with options on the left and notifications on the right. The UI heavily resembles Google’s Chromebook.

Users can expect standard desktop features like floating windows, resizing, and split-screen support.

One notable feature is the ability to smoothly transition the cursor between the external display and the phone when using a mouse. Additionally, there will be an “External Display” settings page where users can adjust display settings such as resolution, size, rotation, and mirroring.

While there’s no official release date for this feature, it’s unlikely to arrive in Android 16. It’s more probable that Desktop Mode will make its debut in Android 17, which will also feature the revamped ‘Material Expressive UI.’

Watch the first look demo below. The phone used showcased is a Google Pixel 8 Pro running the latest Android 16 beta.
