It’s Official: Google’s Android O is Oreo

Listen to article

After numerous leaks that left almost nothing to hide, Google took the wraps off Android‘s newest version, aptly named Oreo, at a Livestream in New York City following the historic solar eclipse in the USA.

With the unveiling, Google has officially made a licensing partnership with Mondelez International, the parent company of the Oreo brand, in using the name on all related campaigns and materials related to the version of the mobile operating system. Google is not new to partnerships related to Android, as it had partnered with Nestle to bring KitKat as the name for Version 4.4 back in 2013.

Android Oreo brings a slew of new and improved features both in user interface and under the hood, such as limiting background processes to improve battery life, a picture-in-picture (PIP) mode for multitasking, sorting notifications through categories, support for wider color gamut in imaging apps and high-quality audio through Sony’s LDAC audio file system, as well as improvements in imaging through a revamped camera app.

Google’s Android Oreo is expected to hit Pixel devices first, followed by Nexus and capable Android One devices, and then to different smartphone manufacturers who will be detailing their timelines of support/release as time goes by. The company also promised that several phone manufacturers such as Essential, General Mobile, HMD Global (Nokia), Huawei, HTC, Kyocera, LG, Motorola, Samsung, Sharp, and Sony have all committed to launch new devices or update existing ones to Oreo by the end of the year.

Sorry about that! We’re struck with the Android powers during launch, and this has been corrected. Thank you!
