Facebook makes its own 360-degree camera

In an attempt to be prepared for what would be the next big thing of the future, Facebook has made its own 360-degree camera and called it the Facebook Surround 360.

Facebook’s aim is to “build the perfect 360 camera” that’s able to shoot high-quality videos from the get-go without having the need to do heavy post processing on the footage just to produce immersive images.  The Surround 360 is reported to record up to 2 hours of 360-video and could go from 4K to 6K, and as high as 8K resolution for each eye.

As impressive as the camera sounds, it won’t be for sale as they have bigger plans for it. The company is going to make the designs publicly available so as to stimulate growth for lower-cost cameras. The more people buy these affordable 360 cameras, the more footage will be available and will give consumers more reasons to buy Facebook’s Oculus Rift VR headsets.

“We want others to join us in refining this technology. We know from experience that a broader community can move things forward faster than we can on our own,” said the company on their blog post.

What do you think about the upcoming trend of VR content? Are you as excited about it as Facebook?
