Sony has announced the discontinuation of its PlayStation Stars loyalty program, which debuted in 2022. The program allowed players to earn points through digital store purchases, trophy achievements, and campaign completions, redeemable for store credit or digital collectibles. Effective immediately, no new members can join, and existing members can continue earning points until July 23, 2025. The program will fully shut down on November 2, 2026.
Sony’s decision follows a period of mixed feedback and a notable month-long outage in 2024 due to a system glitch. While some users appreciated the digital collectibles, others criticized the limited rewards. Sony has indicated plans to evolve its loyalty efforts based on insights gained from PlayStation Stars but has not detailed any replacement program.
With over 55 million PS5 units sold as of March 2025, Sony’s move suggests a strategic shift towards broader community engagement initiatives, potentially focusing on PSN events or enhancements to PlayStation Plus. As the company phases out PlayStation Stars, players are encouraged to redeem their accumulated points before the final shutdown date.
