0:00What is money? That’s usually the logic
0:02of people looking to buy top or even
0:04high-spec gaming laptops. If you can
0:07blow hundreds of thousands of pesos on a
0:09high-end gaming laptop, chances are a
0:11few thousand pesos doesn’t really make a
0:13difference for you anymore. Like, let’s
0:15say 250 to 245,000.
0:18That amount of money, it’s not a big
0:20deal for you. But what if I told you
0:22that you can splurge and still save a
0:24bit of money, not just a few thousands?
0:26That’s what I thought when we got our
0:28hands on the HP Omen Max 16. It comes
0:32with all of the things you want in a
0:34topsp spec gaming laptop. 16in 240 Hz
0:37display, an RTX 5080 GPU, an Intel Core
0:40Ultra 9 CPU, and a lot of RGB. All that
0:44for an SRP of 229,990
0:47pesos. Yes, for most that’s a lot of
0:49money. But the more important question
0:52is this. Can the HP Omen Max 16 sway
0:55buyers away from more popular gaming
0:57laptop brands with its a bit more
0:59affordable value? Well, I’m from Yugate
1:02and let’s find out in this review.
1:10All right, first and foremost, let’s
1:12talk about the design of the Omen Mac
1:1416. When the laptop is closed like this,
1:16you wouldn’t really think it’s a gaming
1:18laptop. No overly exciting design
1:20features here, apart from the small
1:22number 16 above one of the exhaust
1:24vents. The matte black lid features a
1:26minimalist design with just the gloss
1:28Omen logo at the center. Even when you
1:31open it up, there’s not a lot of crazy
1:33gaming cues here. Again, there’s the
1:35number 16 featured at the bottom right
1:37corner of the base. It certainly reminds
1:39me of Alienware laptops with how minimal
1:41the design is. Style is subjective, but
1:44I personally like this minimalist
1:46approach HP went for the Omen Max 16.
1:48But what do you guys think? So, while
1:51the aesthetics might not be for
1:52everyone, it does feel premium given the
1:55aluminum base and lid. Because of this
1:57metal build, the laptop is quite heavy,
2:00weighing 2.75 kg. It’s also big and
2:03bulky, still measuring almost 1 in thick
2:06when closed. This means it’s not exactly
2:08the easiest laptop to bring around. The
2:10trade-off with the bulky body is that
2:12you have a bunch of ports at your
2:14disposal. Majority of them are neatly
2:16hidden at the back. Apart from two USBC
2:19Thunderbolt 4 ports on the left and a
2:21sole USBA port on the right.
2:22Unfortunately, there is no SD or even a
2:25micro SD card slot here. With that, you
2:27will need to bring an adapter if you
2:28plan on using this laptop for content
2:30creation. It’s a bit disappointing
2:32considering how much space is still
2:34available on the sides or even the rear.
2:36Open up the laptop and you have a
2:38full-size keyboard. If you remember the
2:40HP Omen Transcend 14 from last year, the
2:43keys feel very similar, except this time
2:46they’re in black. They’re properly
2:47spaced out, too, making it easy to type.
2:50It’s not the best feeling keyboard out
2:52there, but hey, it works. More
2:54importantly, they’re comfy for typing.
2:56When gaming, you may want to bring a
2:58gaming keyboard with you if you want a
3:00more feel with the keys. But going back,
3:02the letters and numbers together with
3:03the edge of the keys are translucent to
3:05let the RGB properly shine through. And
3:08yes, you can set the RGB lighting to
3:10however you want in the settings. As for
3:12the trackpad, it’s slightly offset to
3:15the left and the finish is similar to
3:16that on the base. It’s ergonomic to use
3:18and to the touch. No special functions
3:21here though, but there is good palm
3:23rejection. But again, if you’re plan on
3:25gaming, I suggest you bring a mouse or
3:27even a controller because you can’t
3:29really game too much on a trackpad. Now,
3:32moving on to the display. As mentioned
3:34earlier, the Omen Max 16 features a
3:3616inch panel with up to 240 Hz refresh
3:39rate, 2K resolution, and 500 nits of
3:42peak brightness. At first, I thought
3:44this was an OLED panel, but it’s
3:46actually an IPS panel. And yes, I know
3:48that you’re going to say it, but this is
3:50a great IPS panel all things considered.
3:52The colors are surprisingly vivid, and
3:54you do have good viewing angles. It’s
3:56still not as visually immersive as
3:58compared to an OLED display, but for
4:00gaming, what’s more important is the
4:02refresh rate. Its high refresh rate
4:03helps a lot, especially when you’re
4:05playing competitive games like Valerant.
4:07Even on more graphic intensive titles
4:09like Forza Horizon 5, you get to enjoy
4:11super smooth gameplay on the screen.
4:13When you’re not playing, users can enjoy
4:15binge watching shows on this laptop.
4:17It’s also more than adequate for editing
4:19photos and videos, as I found out. Out
4:21of the box, the colors are relatively
4:23accurate when compared to my monitor and
4:24even my phone. As for the speakers,
4:26they’re tuned by HyperX, giving users a
4:28great sound stage. They’re also loud,
4:31making it a viable option to play
4:32without using earphones. However,
4:34they’re geared more towards gaming as
4:36compared to audio listening. They’re a
4:38bit more on the bassy side, but still
4:40overall decent for listening to music.
4:43Still, I would recommend using earphones
4:44when gaming for the best immersive
4:46experience. Now, let’s talk performance.
4:49Our review unit of the Omen Max 16 runs
4:51on the Intel Core Ultra 9 chip paired
4:53with 32 GB of RAM and 1 TB of SSD
4:56storage. If you find the RAM and SSD
4:58lacking, these are upgradeable. You just
5:00need to open the back. This being an
5:01Omen laptop, you also have the Omen
5:03gaming hub at your disposal to switch
5:06modes. I always set it to unleash mode
5:08to give me the maximum performance all
5:10the time. You can even manually
5:11overclock and adjust the settings to
5:13your liking. As you would expect, it can
5:15run anything and everything you throw at
5:17it. Even if you run games maxed out
5:19together with other heavy applications
5:21like Lightroom and Adobe Premiere, there
5:23won’t be any issues. In fact, you will
5:25still have steady FPS all throughout,
5:27even when running these apps
5:29simultaneously. Like I mentioned
5:30earlier, this was done using unleash
5:32mode, but even when you’re just in
5:34performance mode, you can run most
5:36graphic intensive titles without issues.
5:38Of course, you do have unleash mode, so
5:41why not use it? But do note that the
5:43laptop will need to be plugged in in
5:44order to use this mode. For reference, I
5:47mostly played Forza Horizon 5 on this
5:49laptop along with the shooter ready or
5:50not. Both games had their graphics
5:52settings maxed out and they had no
5:53issues whatsoever. On Forza, I didn’t
5:56have the usual stutter or frame rate
5:58drops when playing custom maps with
5:59heavy loads and multiple players. Of
6:02course, you can expect the same when
6:03playing lighter games like Valerant,
6:05Genshin, or even ZZ. This means you no
6:07longer need to adjust the graphics
6:09settings lower in order to have
6:11consistent high frame rates when
6:13playing. As a result, a better visual
6:15experience without the need to sacrifice
6:17frame rates. We also ran our usual
6:19benchmarks and as we expected they had
6:22high scores throughout. You can check
6:24them out on screen right now.
6:30[Music]
6:32There’s no doubting the performance of
6:34the Omen Mac 16. However, the battery
6:37isn’t the best as expected with most
6:39gaming laptops. It packs an 83Wh lithium
6:42ion polymer battery pack. However, the
6:44laptop is still quite power hungry.
6:46After just 30 minutes of unplugged play
6:48time with Tekken 8, the battery went
6:50down from 100% to just 60%. For
6:53reference, we were connected to Wi-Fi
6:54and the screen brightness was maxed out.
6:56We were also in performance mode as
6:58well. The battery does run longer when
7:00you’re in eco mode, have the RGB turned
7:02off, and not playing games. That means
7:05you can actually get some productivity
7:07work done. Now, speaking of charging,
7:08you can charge this laptop via the
7:10Thunderbolt 4 port on the side. It’s a
7:12slower charge though, and you will need
7:14a higher wattage brick and cable to do
7:16so. But still, it’s better than bringing
7:18the 330 W charger around, which is heavy
7:21and bulky. In fact, you can already
7:23consider it a deadly weapon if we use it
7:25to hit someone on the head. It’s that
7:27big. Overall, the HP Omen Max 16 is a
7:30great gaming laptop for the price of
7:33229,990
7:35pesos. It’s not perfect. In fact, it’s
7:37far from it. For starters, it’s not
7:39exactly the easiest laptop to bring
7:41around. The specific variant of the Omen
7:43Max 16 also uses an IPS display only.
7:46The OLED version is a bit more
7:48expensive, but it is available. But for
7:50the performance you get, it is very much
7:53bang for your buck. Still, at this price
7:55point, you will have a lot of options at
7:58your disposal. More importantly, if
8:00you’re looking at this segment of gaming
8:02laptops, I’m sure you can easily stretch
8:04your budget by 20 to 40,000 pesos or
8:07even more. If you want a more powerful
8:09gaming laptop or even one with an OLED
8:12display again, for those of you who have
8:14the budget, what is money? But if you
8:16want to save a bit, you can’t go wrong
8:18with the HP Omen Max 16. Still, what do
8:22you guys think of the HP Omen Max 16?
8:24Would you consider it your next topsp
8:26spec gaming laptop or would you get
8:28something else? Whatever the case, share
8:30your thoughts in the comment section

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the HP Omen Max 16 available in the Philippines?

Yes, it is. The model we reviewed carries a suggested retail price (SRP) of PHP 229,990 and should be available through HP’s official channels and authorized retailers.

How does the price compare to similar specced laptops from ASUS ROG or Alienware?

That’s exactly what we explore in the video. The Omen Max 16’s price is positioned to be competitive, often coming in a bit lower than direct competitors with similar top-shelf specs like the RTX 5080. Watch to see if that price difference translates to good value.

Is the design really that plain for a gaming laptop?

It adopts a minimalist approach. Think sleek matte black, a subtle logo, and clean lines instead of aggressive angles and flashy decals. Whether that’s a pro or a con depends on your taste. We show you plenty of close-up shots in the video so you can judge for yourself.

Can it handle the latest AAA games at high settings?

On paper, with an RTX 5080 and Core Ultra 9 processor, it absolutely should. In our video, we don’t just list specs. We put it to the test so you can see real-world performance and frame rates.
