0:00This is the new Poco X8 Pro Max. Sounds
0:04familiar? Well, Poco is clearly going
0:06for a different route with this release.
0:09You see, this is the very first Poco X
0:12series model that has a Max in its name.
0:15We’ve known about the Poco X8 Pro for a
0:17while now. The Pro Max variant doesn’t
0:20just mean a bigger screen. It also means
0:22a more powerful chipset and a bigger
0:25battery. But besides going for an
0:27Apple-like naming scheme, what does the
0:29PO X8 Pro Max bring to the table? Let’s
0:32find out in this review. I’m your host
0:34CJ. Roll that intro.
0:37[music]
0:43Not only does the naming scheme sound
0:45familiar, the looks are pretty much the
0:48same case, too. The Poco X8 Pro Max
0:50reminds me a lot of the base iPhone 17.
0:54Although technically the design is just
0:56a carryover of last year’s Poco X7 Pro.
0:59There’s the pill-shaped camera deco on
1:01the upper left corner, but the lenses
1:03are now leveled with the raised module
1:05itself. And instead of a more obvious
1:07two-tone finish, it looks to have a
1:10onehole slab with some subtle decorative
1:13lines on the right side. Our unit is in
1:15the white colorway sporting a satin-like
1:17finish. And while it is fairly resistant
1:19to smudges, the material itself feels
1:22plasticky in hand. It does have a flat
1:25edge design and the frame does feel
1:27metallic to the touch. For IO’s, we have
1:29the usual layout here. A color accented
1:32power button and the volume rocker on
1:34the right side. One of the speakers and
1:36mic up top, the SIM tray, another mic,
1:38the USBC port, and another speaker grill
1:40are found at the bottom. And there’s
1:42nothing on the left side. Of course,
1:44there’s an IR blaster here, but it’s
1:46hidden somewhere on the back panel,
1:48probably on or beside the camera decor.
1:50Now, in terms of extra protection, I’m
1:52happy to report that the PO X8 Pro Max
1:55is IP68 rated for dust and water
1:57resistance. Now, this phone being a Pro
2:00Max version, of course, it boasts a
2:02large 6.83 in AMOLED display with a 1.5K
2:06resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate. It
2:08has a peak brightness of 3500 nits,
2:10typical brightness at 800 nits, and in
2:12HBM, it can go up to 2,000 nits. This
2:15means when I was using this outdoors, I
2:17could still see the screen clearly. No
2:19complaints here whatsoever. The screen
2:21offers sharp details, vibrant colors,
2:23and deep true blacks. I also like how
2:25thin and uniform the bezels are. It just
2:28makes the large screen more immersive.
2:29Speaking of immersion, the phone
2:31supports dual stereo audio with Dolby
2:33Atmos support, and the audio quality is
2:36decent, but it’s loud for the most part.
2:38The highs come through clearly, although
2:40the mids could get a little more
2:41presence, and the bass doesn’t have a
2:43lot of punch, but you can still hear it
2:45quite a bit. The audio is loud enough
2:47and can fill a small room. It even has
2:49up to 400% volume, but the audio gets
2:52muffled at that point, so I usually set
2:54the volume a notch below 100%. In case
2:57you’re wondering, there’s also Gorilla
2:59Glass 7i on top, providing some degree
3:01of scratch resistance. For biometric
3:04security, the phone handles both face
3:06unlock and underdis fingerprint sensor.
3:08Notably, it’s already using an
3:10ultrasonic sensor, so it’s more reliable
3:12and a tad bit faster at reading my
3:14print, unlocking the phone almost
3:16instantly, so that’s a plus. Moving on
3:19to cameras, I’m afraid the Pro Max
3:22moniker doesn’t really apply here. Just
3:24like the Poco X8 Pro, the X8 Pro matches
3:27the exact dual rear setup [music] except
3:29for having a more capable sensor. It has
3:31a 50 megap main shooter with OIS support
3:34along with an 8 MP ultra wide lens. Up
3:37front is a 20 megapixel selfie camera.
3:39Looking at our sample shots, the image
3:41quality looks nice, especially images
3:43taken from the main sensor. The clarity
3:45is on point with accurate color
3:46reproduction and surprisingly good
3:48dynamic range. Portrait shots look great
3:50with natural-looking bokeh and have a
3:52good subject and background separation.
3:54I like that the colors are consistent
3:56even at different zoom levels and the
3:59ultra wide lens can actually capture
4:00nice wide angle shots with decent
4:02clarity. Selfies look nice, too,
4:04providing fairly accurate skin color and
4:06texture. Weirdly enough, the video
4:07capture look a little bit dull and
4:09dimmer, almost like a gray filter. The
4:11phone can shoot 4K videos at 60 fps from
4:13the rear, and both the ultra wide and
4:15selfie cameras are capped at 1080p at 30
4:17frames per second. Overall video quality
4:20is still mostly good with decent clarity
4:22and well stabilized footage.
4:24>> Hi guys, this is JM and this is a sample
4:26video from the Poco X8 Pro Max using the
4:30front camera and it’s shooting at 1080p
4:32at 30 fps.
4:35This is what it looks like. And what do
4:37you think about the audio and image
4:38quality? Let us know in the comments
4:41below. [music]
4:49>> [music]
4:57[music]
5:03>> Hey,
5:06[music]
5:08hey, hey.
5:12>> [music]
5:21[music]
5:25>> Now moving on to performance. This is
5:26where the Poco X8 Pro Max starts to brag
5:29some rights. Under the hood, it boasts a
5:32MediaTek Dimensity 9500S, which is a 3nm
5:35chip. So, we’re expecting some flagship
5:37level performance here. Our benchmark
5:39results actually vouch for us with the
5:40phone getting over 3 million points in
5:42antut2u version 11. It even gets good
5:44graphical performance with it 3D Mark
5:46Wildlife result being maxed out and its
5:49wildlife extreme result averaging about
5:5137 fps. Setting the numbers aside, doing
5:54productivity tasks, multitasking, and
5:56especially gaming, the Poco X8 Pro Max
5:59has no sweat juggling those. Casual
6:01games with Mobile Legends ran smoothly
6:03at up to 120 FPS with high graphics
6:06settings enabled. and more demanding
6:07ones like weathering waves also ran
6:09decently even at max out graphical
6:11settings. The phone does heat up quite a
6:13bit as expected from tweaking graphics
6:15to the highest settings possible, so I’d
6:18suggest keeping them at medium settings
6:19to avoid overheating. On the software
6:21side, the Poco X8 Pro Max ships with
6:24Hyper OS 3 Android 16. This being a Poco
6:27phone though, expect some heavy ads and
6:30bloatware here and there. The UI design
6:32is pretty much the same inspired look as
6:34before, though it gets smoother
6:35animations and more customization
6:37options, especially in the lock screen.
6:39One thing to note here is that Poco
6:41finally enables advanced textures in the
6:43settings. Of course, there are the usual
6:45functionalities here, including
6:46multitasking features like split screen,
6:48floating windows. There’s also the Hyper
6:50Island if anyone’s wondering. The phone
6:52also comes with Xiaomi HyperAI features
6:54which if I’m not mistaken was only
6:56exclusive with the Poco F series and
6:59some high-end models from the Xiaomi
7:00brand itself. So that’s a welcome
7:02addition here. In terms of update
7:04policy, however, Poco said to announce
7:06how long it to support the X8 Pro Max.
7:09But if they are to maintain its software
7:10pledge from before with the Poco X7 Pro,
7:13we can expect at least three major OS
7:15upgrades and four years of security
7:16patches. Battery-wise, the X8 Pro Max
7:19packs a massive 8,500 mAh battery, and
7:22the bump in capacity is no joke. In our
7:25video loop test, the phone managed to
7:26get 33 hours and 20 minutes of run time.
7:29That’s honestly a good number. While the
7:30phone supports 100 Ws of wired charging,
7:33our unit did not come with a charging
7:34brick in the box. Unfortunately, there
7:36was only the charging cable. That’s it.
7:38Using a compatible Xiaomi charger,
7:40though, was able to refill the battery
7:42from zero to 100 in just over an hour.
7:44There’s no bypass charging here, but
7:46Poco did add what it calls smart
7:48charging that automatically adjusts
7:51charging speed based on battery level,
7:53temps, and whatnot. Also, no wireless
7:55charging here, but that’s fine since
7:57this ain’t a flagship model anyway.
7:58Connectivitywise, the X8 Pro Max gets
8:01all the essentials here, including dual
8:03nano SIM with 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth,
8:06NFC, and the stable IR blaster. What I
8:09really like in this part is it finally
8:11supports eSIM and that’s always going to
8:13be a plus in R book especially for a
8:15mid-range phone. So after covering all
8:17the bases, what do we think about the
8:19Poco X8 Pro Max? To put it to
8:21perspective, Poco’s X series has always
8:23been about delivering the best value for
8:26money in the sub20,000 peso price range.
8:28The PO X8 Pro Max seems to be expanding
8:31from that, now maximizing flagship level
8:33performance while still potentially
8:34having a more competitive pricing. It’s
8:37still a PO X series model after all. I
8:39wonder what will happen now with the
8:40base PO F8 model. One will ever come out
8:43that is. However, with the RAM and
8:45storage drive soaring high in prices,
8:48it’s probably safe to assume that the PO
8:50X8 Pro Max or any new smartphone release
8:52for that matter will all be more
8:54expensive from now on. But if Poco is
8:57able to keep the prices low for the Poco
8:58X8 series, just like what they did with
9:00the F8 series, then it’s easily going to
9:03be one of this year’s most compelling
9:04options. period. But what do you think
9:07of the PO X8 Pro Max? Will you get
9:09anytime soon? We’d love to hear your
9:10thoughts in the comment section below.
