Google announces Chrome OS for Netbooks

Can’t believe this is true but the official Google has announced it has developed a Chrome Operating System targeted towards netbooks.

The announcement same out today:

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we’re already talking to partners about the project, and we’ll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

Google Chrome OS will be based on a Linux kernel and will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips. Google is actually talking to several netbook manufacturers to bring the Chrome OS to market by middle of next year.

Google Chrome OS is a separate project from Google Android. Everybody is going to get very busy — Nokia and Intel is cooperating on Moblin, Google has Chrome OS and Microsoft has Windows 7. Since Chrome OS is basically just another Linux flavor, will it succeed or go the same path as Xandros on the Eee PC?

it promises smaller megabyte footprint, but will it be compatible with some of my needed apps? like Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Office Enterprise, and KMP Media Player?

Well Chrome OS looks promising and with the resources at hand by google I am sure this OS could be better than any linux based OS.

It is always nice that there are new thing that we will surely enjoy. I am planning to buy a new notebook and I hope I can have this one as my OS so I can try it out and make a comment about it.

Well Google Chrome (browser) is indeed great and performed excellently (at least for me, even better than firefox). So let’s see if my impression on the browser coincides with the OS. I can’t wait for Windows 7, though I want to see how Google beats up MS. This is war.

Microsoft hasn’t developed a good Operating System lately that’s why companies such as Google, Linux and Apple have tried to gain market share by promoting new and better OS.

i am using ubuntu and mint now… sana maganda yung interface ng Google chrome OS pero dependent pa din ako sa MS kapag presentation ang gagawin mas madali kasi at dun na nasanay kaya yung ubuntu naka dualbooth

Fail like Linux in the Netbook market????????????????????? Linux dominates the Netbook.
7 out of 10 netbook owners replace the default installed OS with a Linux Distro soon after purchase.
Just because MS threatens the manufacturers if they sell Linux Netbooks, doesnt make it a failure .. it just shows how evil and monopolizing MS is.

Financial might of Google will make the difference. A sharing scheme for every revenue of ads per netbook sold with the OS will be definitely a good proposal. Anyway it is all about business at the end of the day!

I was shocked when I saw Google’s tweet and instantly tried to remember if it was April fool’s again. :D

I’m not sure if I’ll be using this at all since I’m already all set for Windows 7. But this is good news to stiffen up the netbook OS competition.

i knew it! Google OS has finally been verified and its not just a rumor! Woah! Just as I imagined it; Google is aiming for web applications. To quote TechCrunch: “What Google is doing is not recreating a new kind of OS, theyâ€™re creating the best way to not need one at all.”

I think that is also the main reason why Google’s been pushing the HTML 5 standard.. so that even if you’re not connected to the net, you’ll still be able to work and just upload the changes once you’re online again..
