Google Chrome comes to the iPad, iPhone

Listen to article

On the second day of Google I/O 2012 keynote, the search giant announced that an iOS version of Google Drive and Chrome Browser will now be available for download starting today.

With an estimated 310 million users worldwide as of today, Google is about to make that count even higher by bringing their widely-used Chrome Browser to iOS users.

I tried to search for the browser on the App Store on my iPad but it has yet to appear at the time of writing. It may take some time before it does appear, but the main thing here is that it is coming.

Along with this announcement, there are other neat features that were discussed during the keynote. Most of which revolves around the idea of “Chrome Synching” through Cloud technology. We’ll discuss more on that on a separate post.

Updated (9AM): We managed to download the Chrome app from the iTunes store and downloaded Google Chrome.

Chrome for the iPad has that same light, breezy feel as the one we used to know on the PC. Even the keybaord layout has given much focus on widely-used, special characters that we use for the web (colon, period, dash, slash and .com).

We still can’t figure out how to make it the default browser (new links from other apps still opens Safari).

Why does Google create apps earlier and better-looking in iOS than in their very own Android OS? Dammit Google, you betray your own.

If you have a jailbroken iOS device, go to Cydia and add the source http://rpetri.ch/repo and install Browser Chooser. :)

You can’t set the browser as default unless your iOS device is jailbroken. Apple is too clever. ;)

It’s not just clever. It’s dictatorship. Apple wants you to only use their crappy browser.

According to this article apple does not allow others to be the default browser only safari but if your device is jailbroken there is a way/tweak around this restriction.

You can never set it as the default. Isn’t it an iOS thing? :)
