OPPO F5 Youth Hands-on, First Impressions

OPPO is on a roll with the release of their newest smartphone with A.I. beautification technology, the F5. Now, they have recently launched the “Younger” version — the F5 Youth. Here’s our hands-on and first impressions of the device.

The F5 Youth looks almost exactly the same as the F5 but with slight physical differences. It does not have the line design located at the top corners of the device. However, has the same sleek design and form factor with an 18:9 screen aspect ratio and narrow bezels. It even has the same matte-finish with its polycarbonate back panel that could be easily mistaken as metal plating.

Starting at the front, we have the 16MP front camera with AI Beautification at the left, the call speaker at the middle, and receiver at the right. The whole front panel is covered with Gorilla Glass 5 screen protection, with an included screen protector on top. Located below is the device’s on-screen navigation buttons.

The display has an 18:9 screen aspect ratio with a resolution of 2160 x 1080. The display is vibrant, color accurate, and has good viewing angles.

Looking below, the loudspeaker, micro USB port, microphone, and the 3.5mm headphone port are located here.

Moving to the right side is where the power button and the triple sim card tray are located. Two nano-SIM cards and a microSD card can be inserted in the phone at the same time, which is a plus for users who dislike hybrid SIM slots.

The volume controls are placed on the left side. There aren’t any ports or sensors located at the top of the smartphone which gives it a more clean and simplistic design.

On the back is where the 13MP rear camera with LED flash is located. A little down below that is the dedicated fingerprint scanner.

The rear camera was able to produce good images with accurate colors, even though it has a lower resolution than the one on the F5.

For the front camera, the F5 Youth has the same AI Beautification technology feature as in the F5, wherein the front camera can detect more than 200 points in a user’s face touches up the parts where beautification needs to be done. Check out the sample selfies we took.

In the hands, the F5 youth is easy to grip and light, but does not slide off your hand all thanks to its matte finish at the back. It is not much of a smudge magnet, but there are still traces of fingerprints left at the front and back after being held. It may be big, but it does not feel too cumbersome due to its slim and lightweight design.

The device is powered by a MediaTek MT6737T, or commonly known as Helio P23. It runs on Android 7.1 Nougat with ColorOS 3.2, same as the OPPO F5. Simple navigation and application loading times are fast and responsive, and we didn’t experience any stutters while using it.

The OPPO F5 Youth is basically a clone of the F5 with slight modifications to its physical appearance and specs. It also has a more affordable price of Php13,990.
