YouTube introduces AI-generated search highlights, summaries

Listen to article

YouTube is getting some AI-powered feature, specifically two new AI tools: AI search highlights and a built-in conversational AI through an “Ask” button. The latter of which is currently in testing.

When you search on YouTube, you’ll now see a row of video highlights at the top of the results. These include short descriptions and context for each clip, which should help users find what they’re looking for faster.

Tapping on a thumbnail will take you directly to the full video. Below the carousel, users can also scroll through more related videos.

Then, there’s the “Ask” button. This is a conversational AI tool that can answer questions about the video you’re watching or give a quick summary. Notably, the tool pulls information from both YouTube and other sources online.

These features will roll out gradually. The search carousel will be available only to YouTube Premium users for now, while the Ask button will be accessible to everyone, even non-premium users. Both features are launching first in the US.
