#NokiaMWC Hands-on: Nokia XL

Nokia is positioning the new Nokia X line-up in between the Asha and the Lumia smartphones so the design and price positioning is evident especially for the Nokia XL which is the top handset of the 3.

The Nokia XL is a 5-inch smartphone that looks very similar to the colorful Lumia smartphones we’ve seen before.

The XL has the same build quality and materials as the Lumia 900 or the 1320. The smooth matte finish of the polycarbonate material pops with the vibrant colors of green, orange, etc. It feels very solid on the hands too, offering a comfortable grip with one hand.

At the front, the 5-inch display somewhat protrudes from the edges of the device. The power button and the volume controls are found on the right side. There is a singular Back soft button at the bottom corner of the front panel, which reminds us of the WP and eschewing the typical Android controls.

The hardware configuration isn’t impressive but very typical and competitive of most other Android handsets with a retail price of under Php7,000 (€109). Nevertheless, the system still looks snappy and fluid.

Nokia XL specs:
5.0-inch IPS LCD display @ 800×480 pixels, 187ppi
Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 1.0GHz dual-core
768MB RAM
4GB internal storage
up to 32GB via microSD
Single-SIM (micro-SIM) or Dual-SIM
3G/HSPA 7.2Mbps
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth 3.0 + HS
5MP rear camera with LED flash
141.4 x 77.7 x 10.9mm
190 grams
Li-Ion 2000mAh
Nokia X software platform 1.0 (Android Jellybean based platform)

The back panel can also be removed to expose the battery, the SIM card slots and microSD card slot.

The Nokia XL comes in either single SIM or dual-SIM configuration. Nokia call the operating system the Nokia X platform but it’s actually the open-source version of Android with heavy customization and a UI similar to the Live Tiles of Windows Phone.

The Nokia Store has thousands of apps and there are also 3rd-party app stores to complement it as well as the option to side-load almost any Android app via the microSD card.

The Nokia XL will be available by 2nd quarter of 2014 with a suggested retail price of €109 or just under Php7,000. It will come in green, white, black, blue, yellow and orange colors.

Yes! Nokia is on track na! Onga naman, why would you compare Nokia to other brands? Ang edge ng Nokia sa iba is yung quality ng phone that they make. It’s been 9 years and still alive and kicking! Nokia can. And Nokia phones are user friendly at hindi nakakalitong gamitin. Diba? So, dun sa mga bashers ng Nokia, BACK OFF DAHIL NOKIA IS THE BEST PHONE EVER! :)

people seem to compare this phones chipset with CM one’s…

The Nokia X Family is the Android spin-off of the Nokia Lumia 520 (or 521 kung nandito kayo sa US). Yes it is a given that hardware wise the device is a little too low. Remember that they are using Jelly Bean 4.1.2 AOSP without all the Google stuff in it, relatively, it does work and live up to the name Google started as “Buttery Smooth”.

Yes, luma na nga yung gamit nilang Android Core, but Elop mentioned that they’ll be providing updates via FOTA.

This year, Microsoft and Nokia are expected to realese big updates, the WP8.1, Asha Platform 3, and X Platform (unknown nga lang kung ano).

There is a glimmer of hope that these Nokia X Family might eeceive their first update to Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 AOSP by Q3 of 2014 and maybe Android Jelly Bean 4.3.1 AOSP by Q1 of 2015, at least by that time Google would have already fixed the hardware issues thay are having with Android KitKat 4.4.2.

5-incher tapos walang HD? Ano to panlaban nila sa CM Cruize?

So tatangkilin talaga to ng mga balasubas nating kababayan (who make up 95% of the country) hihihi!

how does the nokia x’ forked android differ with blackberry 10.2.1 capacity to load and run android apps? Nice to see BBM on Nokia X.

    • Avatar for mj mj says:

BB10 runs Android apps via emulator, the Nokia X runs Android apps natively. Because it is based on AOSP.

  13. Avatar for lol lol says:

forked android naman to… so sana dahil walang bloatwares eh medyo smooth na kahit 768 mb lang ang ram. I’d rather buy a nokia device than a CM device. mas okay ang support ng nokia kahit sa devs. excited to flash stock android on it.

An android nokia + 41megapixel pureview cam please!!!!!

    Wuhoooh.

  15. Avatar for Bullet Bullet says:

“768MB RAM”… What the??? Trying to be unique with the specs? Hmmm… I used to love Nokia… Let’s see if they can charm me back… and I’m waiting for more bang for the buck Nokia Android OS units to come! :)

  16. Avatar for benchmark benchmark says:

Well I hope this will help Nokia get back up. Between china phones rebranded, I’d rather buy Nokia phones instead..somewhat may assurance ka na tatagal naman sang phone.

Medyo mababa specs, at that price makikipag compete sila sa area ng cheery mobile, my phone, etc which have better specs at that price range.

    • Avatar for dags dags says:

Not everyone wants to use a brand that has piss-poor aftersales support (*cough* Cherry Mobile *cough*). What Nokia may lack in terms of specs, they make it up with their good aftersales service.

    • Avatar for Ric Ric says:

    • Avatar for dags dags says:

And it looks like you’re also forgetting that the Microsoft-Nokia deal allows Microsoft to use Android to push their own services instead of Google’s. Just because Microsoft bought Nokia’s devices division does not mean that this will be Nokia’s first and last Android smartphone. In fact, this is just a new beginning both for Nokia and Microsoft with the latter planning to use Android to promote their services such as Skype, OneDrive, Office and much more. Expect more of these Nokia Android Smartphones to come once Microsoft has completed the deal before the end of February.

I advise that you read this article so you’ll know what I’m talking about:

Looks like you’re forgetting that the local smartphone brands here in the Philippines will be screwed big time once the Nokia X arrives here.
