Listen to article

Apple has just announced that they are recalling select models of 15-inch MacBook Pro units due to battery issues.

In Apple’s announcement, the company discovered that a limited number of older generation 15-inch MacBook Pro units may have batteries that are prone to overheating and pose a fire safety risk. The affected units were sold mainly around September 2015 until February 2017. Due to the battery issue, Apple is voluntarily offering the affected batteries, free of charge.

Here are the steps to check if the 15-inch MacBook Pro unit you own is among those included in the recall:

  • Click on the Apple menu (?) in the upper-left corner of your screen, choose About This Mac option
  • Confirm is your unit’s model is “MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015).”
  • If you have that model, enter your unit’s serial number here to know if it is eligible for the replacement program

If your unit is eligible for replacement, Apple has stated that you may have your battery replaced through authorized Apple Service Providers. For more information, check Apple’s dedicated announcement page here.
