OpenAI is reportedly preparing to launch its first hardware product, and it may come in the form of AI-powered earbuds. According to a tipster on Chinese social platform Weibo, the company is working on earbuds that run on OpenAI’s own AI model, marking its first step into consumer hardware.

The report says OpenAI has scaled back its original hardware plans due to rising production costs. Earlier rumors suggested the company was developing a small wearable device, such as a pendant or pen. This idea matched comments from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who described the planned device as more calm and less distracting than a smartphone.
However, plans appear to have changed. Instead of a brand-new form factor, OpenAI is now focusing on something more familiar and easier to produce: wireless earbuds. The product is said to be internally called “Dime,” though no official name has been confirmed.
Details about the earbuds remain limited. There is no information yet on design, features, or how the AI will be used in daily tasks. The report claims the earbuds could launch before the end of the year. A more advanced version may follow later, once global supply issues related to high-bandwidth memory (HBM) improve.
OpenAI’s move into hardware follows its hiring of former Apple chief designer Jony Ive, signaling long-term interest in building AI-focused consumer devices. For now, the earbuds appear to be a cautious first step into hardware, as OpenAI tests the market before expanding further.
