World Cyber Games 2008

WCG 2008 is on. The Cyber Game Festival will be held in Cologne, Germany this year and the Philippine contingent better make it to the finals this time. Spent the whole afternoon at City Kart Racing to attend the press launch of the 2008 World Cyber Games, and of course some kart racing.

world cyber games 2008For avid gamers, the WCG is like the Olympics of gaming and for the last 7 years, the Philippines is one of the many countries vying for the championship (the farthest we’ve gone is in the quarterfinals of 2005).

Preliminaries will be held starting May 17 while provincial eliminations will be held in Davao City and Cebu City between June 14 to 22.

Official games include Counterstrike 1.6, WarCraft 3: Frozen Throne, Command and Conquer 3, Kane’s Wrath and the new game Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock. The absence of Starcraft is quite obvious, as it was one of the highlights of the previous year’s competition. Not sure why. Forgot to ask.

Those not familiar with the tournament, watch this National Geographic feature on the finals of the World Cybergames 2005 held in Suntec, Singapore.

You can get more updates at the WCG PH website here.

Side note: Everybody should try that City Kart Racing. It’s so cool. I finished second in my batch during the race but never made it to the top 3. No prize for me here; just some sore phalanges and a hip injury.

Abe gamer at heart ayaw pa aminin. :p
    Yeah, Kart Racing FTW!

Maybe they removed StarCraft to give way to SC2. Slowly kill the phenomenon so the SC2 can have a place in the gamers’ hearts.

OR, because S. Korea SC players always win, unbeatable. So there’s no point having a competition for SC :p

Starcraft to Koreans can be described as sort of the official RTS of the country (not sure if it’s North or South or both).

I can’t believe they included the Command and Conquer in the line up though. IMHO, Supreme Commander is the better option.

Aw, Ragnarok didn’t make it. And the global RO community voted so much for it to be included.

    Hehe :p

They will port the DotA concept to StarCraft 2. Can’t wait how it will be implemented though. I’m dont agree porting it, because the RTS side of SC2 will die just like WC3, but let’s see. Might turn-out to be different than WC3 vs DotA. :p
