In line with Google’s other announcements in their I/O 2023 developer conference, Google also unveiled their new developments with Search through generative AI.

Users will now be able to try new generative AI capabilities of Search via Search Labs, Google’s portal to access early experiments in Google Search.
With the new generative AI capabilities embedded in Search, users will now be able to understand topics faster as Search will automatically present different viewpoints and insights to a given topic.
Google uses this question as an example: “What’s better for a family with kids under 3 and a dog, bryce canyon or arches.”
When normally, one would need to break the question down into smaller ones, sort through the vast information available, and start to piece things together yourself, Search (with generative AI) will do some of that heavy lifting instead.

Search will automatically suggest next steps, as well as offer the ability to ask follow-up questions such as “How long to spend at Bryce Canyon with kids?” The Context of the search will be automatically carried over from question to question.
Another new capability of Search with generative AI is shopping. You will now be presented with the different important factors to consider in a given product purchase when you want to shop for something.
Instead of merely receiving results about what type of bike to get for commuting (as seen below), Search will give you a quick overview of the important factors to consider with such a purchase.

Search with generative AI is open for sign-ups via Search Labs today. You can visit http://labs.google.com/search to learn more.

Highly doubtful this will be as useful as ChatGPT because of Google’s preoccupation with their ads. Their ads system is the reason why people embraced ChatGPT the way they did. You can’t get any decent search results from Google because the results you need are buried by SEO driven results prioritized by Google.
