Huawei’s HarmonyOS NEXT adopts Apple app distribution model

Listen to article

In a recent update for developers, Huawei’s HarmonyOS NEXT integrated an app distribution model used by Apple users.

Apple has certain, strict rules applied on their App Store. However, users are able to sneak in apps with special certificates to work their way around it.

Similarly, HarmonyOS NEXT is making these loopholes available to developers. It’s quite some work, as developers have to get their apps certified or supported by profiles under an organization.

When the apps are ready, developers can launch them onto a server or cloud storage for people to install. But keep in mind, apps involved in this process are under a company or developer’s discretion.

Huawei noted that this update is for ‘HarmonyOS applications that are not suitable or do not want to be publicly released on the Huawei App Market’.

In addition, this method only works for apps built using HarmonyOS’ Stage model.
