Xiaomi’s PU7 Electric SUV Takes Aim at Tesla Model Y

Listen to article

Xiaomi today pulled back the curtain on its PU7 electric SUV in China, marking a bold step to challenge Tesla’s Model Y in the world’s largest EV market. Reservations open in July 2025, and the PU7 promises segment-leading range and performance wrapped in a sleek, coupe-like silhouette.

Building on the success of its SU7 sedan—which has already racked up over 200,000 deliveries in just under eight months—the PU7 arrives in three variants. The Standard model offers a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive setup with an industry-best 518-mile (835 km) range on its 96.3 kWh LFP battery, while the Pro and Max versions upgrade to dual-motor AWD, boasting 479-mile (770 km) and 472-mile (760 km) ranges respectively. Impressively, the top-end Max accelerates from 0–100 km/h in just 3.23 seconds, on par with some of the quickest EVs on the road.

Xiaomi has equipped the PU7 with high-voltage 800 V architecture—peaking at 897 V—to enable ultra-fast charging, taking the battery from 10 % to 80 % in 12 minutes or adding 385 miles (620 km) of range in 15 minutes. Under the hood, an Nvidia Drive AGX Thor platform powers advanced driver-assist features, while active air suspension adapts the ride for sporty handling or smooth cruising.

China’s tech giant is positioning the PU7 as a range champion, underscoring CEO Lei Jun’s belief that “range is the number-one concern for EV buyers.” Early specs suggest the PU7 outpaces the refreshed Model Y’s maximum 448-mile (720 km) range and matches its performance—but pricing won’t be revealed until closer to the July launch window. Industry whispers suggest the PU7 may command a premium of 60,000–70,000 CNY above comparable Model Y trims.

With reservations set to open this summer and deliveries to follow in late 2025, Xiaomi is betting big on the PU7 to wrest market share from Tesla. If the PU7 lives up to its promise—combining class-leading range, rapid charging, and cutting-edge tech in a stylish package—it could reshape expectations for electric SUVs in China and beyond.
