Rakuten Viber has partnered with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT-powered features directly into the Viber app for users in the Philippines.

Through the integration, Viber users can now access ChatGPT tools without leaving the messaging app. The new features are available for free on Viber for iOS and Android, with desktop support coming at a later date. Rakuten Viber said the rollout is designed to make AI tools more accessible for everyday use, even for users who may not have used an AI assistant before.

One of the main additions is a dedicated ChatGPT in Viber contact and tab, which lets users ask questions, get help with tasks, brainstorm ideas, or search for information directly within the app. Users do not need a ChatGPT account to start using the feature, although they can log in or create one to connect their account and access higher usage limits.

Viber is also adding the ability to tag ChatGPT in private and group conversations. By typing “@” and selecting ChatGPT, users can ask the assistant for suggestions or answers inside an ongoing chat. Viber said only the specific message addressed to ChatGPT is shared for processing, not the rest of the conversation.

The partnership also introduces several other ChatGPT-powered tools inside Viber. These include Image Remix, which allows users to edit and personalize photos directly in one-on-one and group chats; Link Summary, which can summarize articles, blog posts, and documents shared in chats; and Chat Summary, which generates a private recap of busy conversations to help users catch up more quickly.

Viber users in the Philippines can also access Polish Messages, which rewrites messages for tone and clarity before sending, and Translate Message, which offers in-chat translation for conversations in different languages.

According to Rakuten Viber, most of the new tools can be used immediately after updating to the latest version of the app. Image Remix requires users to log in to ChatGPT or create a free account inside Viber, while the rest of the ChatGPT-powered features do not require separate sign-up.

Rakuten Viber CEO Ofir Eyal said the company wants to make everyday communication easier and more creative by integrating AI into the app’s existing messaging experience. OpenAI Vice President and Head of Global Business Development Torben Severson said the partnership brings helpful and creative AI tools into a platform people already use for daily communication.

Viber said privacy and security remain central to the rollout. Its core messaging and calling features remain protected by end-to-end encryption, while ChatGPT-powered tools require user consent before first use. For AI features outside the dedicated ChatGPT chat, Viber said only the specific text, image, or request selected by the user is sent to OpenAI for processing, not the rest of the conversation.

The new ChatGPT features are now rolling out to Viber users in the Philippines on Android and iOS.
