OpenAI unveils GPT-5.6 with Sol, Terra, Luna AI models

OpenAI has announced the GPT-5.6 series. These are three new AI models called Sol, Terra and Luna.

Each model is designed for different needs, giving users a choice between higher performance, balanced capabilities or lower cost.

GPT-5.6 Sol is the flagship model and comes with OpenAI’s strongest AI safety protections yet according to the brand. They say that it improved safeguards against misuse and cyber-related threats before the model’s release.

GPT-5.6 Terra is designed for everyday tasks and delivers performance similar to GPT-5.5 while costing half as much. Luna is the fastest and most affordable model in the lineup.

OpenAI also introduced a new naming system where the version number represents the model generation while Sol, Terra and Luna identify different performance tiers.

The GPT-5.6 models are currently available through a limited preview for selected partners. OpenAI plans to expand access to ChatGPT, the API and Codex in the coming weeks.
