The SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service is about to go online in the Philippines soon after encountering delays.
SpaceX’s local partner, Data Lake Inc.—owned by businessmen Henry Sy Jr. and Anthony Almeda—announced that they had met with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to discuss Starlink’s imminent entry as an internet service provider (ISP) into the Philippine market by the first quarter of 2023.
In addition, the government is currently taking steps to expedite the launch of Starlink services in the Philippines, allowing for internet connectivity in remote areas.
Data Lake vice chairman and CEO Anthony Almeda, expressed his excitement, noting that Starlink’s high speed and low latency broadband internet service via satellite would be revolutionary in connecting the 7,640 islands of the Philippines to the world.
Starlink’s entry had been delayed due to the production and deployment of its low earth orbit satellites, pushing the original plan from December 2022 to 2023.
Data Lake and Elon Musk-owned SpaceX signed a deal last year, making the local data company the first integrator of Starlink in the country and Southeast Asia as well.
A Starlink satellite dish costs USD 599 (around Php 33,000 in today’s conversion) and a monthly subscription is estimated at USD 99 (~Php 5,400).
The Philippines will be the first nation in Southeast Asia to offer SpaceX’s satellite-based internet services.
