So here’s a thought. If the Intel Atom processor is being pushed to the desktop, why can’t people buy and build one of their own? Apparently, you can buy one of these tiny CPUs and build your own low-power desktop PC for cheap.
Was having lunch with Intel’s Country Manager a couple of days ago when he asked me something along this lines, “How would you extend the netbook?“. Surely, most would say faster CPU or bigger storage but the fact is, all other PCs are going that way.
This Friday, Intel will be launching their newest mobile CPU in the Philippines — the Centrino 2. However, the Intel Atom usually takes center stage nowadays because of the heavy proliferation of cheap netbooks. Could the Atom be more of a headache rather than a blessing to Intel’s bottomline?

Ever since the smaller laptops went to market and Intel started touting their new Atom CPUs as top of the line in terms of processing power and consumption, people wanted to see some comparative benchmarks. Well, I found some really detailed ones and they’ve tested the Via Nano 1.8GHz vs. the Intel Atom 230 1.6GHz — the closest chips between the two competitors.

Intel announced yesterday the 4th quarter release of the new Intel Atom 330 Dual Core processors running at 1.6GHz & 1.87GHz, an upgrade to the earlier single-core Atom 230.
