Tutorial: How to manually update ZenFone 2 devices into Android 6.0 Marshmallow

ASUS has began rolling out its Android 6.0 Marshmallow update for the ZenFone 2, ZenFone 2 Laser 5.0/5.5ZenFone Max and ZenFone Selfie, which means it will eventually hit all devices as an over-the-air (OTA) update. Unfortunately, that could take several days or weeks, which can feel like an eternity. The good news is that you can download the official FOTA update straight from ASUS website and manually install it yourself. Do note that only the ZenFone 2 (ZE551ML/ZE550ML), ZenFone 2 Laser (ZE500KL/ZE550KL) and ZenFone Selfie (ZD551KL) devices are currently supported for the manual update, the full firmware of the ZenFone Max is not yet available.

In this tutorial, I will teach you how to manually update your ZenFone 2 into the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Note: Before you do this, make sure to backup all your files first. I will not be responsible for anything that happens to you or your device when following this tutorial.

INSTRUCTION:

  1. Download the full firmware from ASUS. Be careful to select your device accordingly.
    ZenFone 2 (Mirror Link / Beta Update) ZE551ML 27     ZE550ML
    ZenFone 2 LaserZE500KL 12    ZE550KL 13
    ZenFone SelfieZD551KL
Note: After the download has been completed, just leave the firmware on the root storage of your device OR if you are using your computer to download, copy the file also to the root storage. File size is roughly 1.2GB – 1.6GB, use a stable internet connection preferably Wi-Fi.
  2. Once the above step is done, you will be notified of a “System Update File Detected” on your notification bar. If you do not get a notification, restart your device.
  3. You should see the prompt to select the firmware package you’ve downloaded, make sure that is selected and click on OK. After this, your phone will restart and begin upgrading toy Marshmallow. Then you will see that “Installing System Update” and “Android is upgrading” message.
Note: It will take roughly 20-30 Minutes for the update to be completed, the phone can’t be used until the update is completed.
  4. Your ZenFone 2 / ZenFone 2 Laser / ZenFone Selfie is now upgraded into Android 6.0 Marshmallow!
You will be greeted with the Marshmallow notifications as the phone booted up and you will also get a prompt that the “System update is successful”.  You may need to update Google Play services and some of the preloaded ASUS apps after the update, so please check it and do so.

i think two weeksago, i updated my sisters zenfone 2 64 gb version using adb following instructions from http://www.stechguide.com/update-asus-zenfone-2-to-marshmallow/
first i tried copying the update, tried to rename it, relocate it used different memory card but still no popup update is showing.
then i tried adb, and in less than 5 mins it was in MM.
I bought the device for her in MemoExpress so we can say it surely is a local version.

hahaha hahaha,i see so many around here that did tryed the beta, pfff, and i see 1 in here even that bricked hes phone trying to install the beta through TWRP,hahaha ,well, first of all for those that thought they are smart,i will tell you how you can manage to install the beta, first of all,the phone has to be unrooted, that’s the first and very important, which it means no TWRP,second, your bootloader has to be unlocked,3rd,your room has to be stock, with all the apps that comes with the original stock rom and unaltered ,that’s why many did bricked their phone, even tho some i see that think they know what they r doing hahaha, now,i just told you how u can have that beta of the android MM for ZE551ML,it is working great and it is stable,i have it and i can say that i love it,the battery it last longer in standby, but ofc i took care of 2 things that always were crap and always will be crap,as i saw in this movie that r ppl that really believe that those craps worth something,1 is the proccess killer,or apps killer and second is that cm security, for the first 1,there is no app in this world that actually do something to kill a process on android, for a simple reason, the apps that those apps try to kill actually have 0 power consumption and ocupy 0 kb in memory, now, that app is useless for a simple fact,it stays loaded in memory, consumes lot of power,it has to stay loaded to search for the loaded apps and try to kill them when they r,that is power consuming for nothing,it was proven lot of times, those apps consume memory and power more than any other app,for the second,i wanna hear just 1 persone that found a virus in hes/her android device ? there is none, not yet so another thing that is useless for now on a phone,so…good luck installing the new beta,if you know what you’re doing…

We got the official release note of the Marshmallow update for ZenFone 2 directly from ZenTalk Philippines. We published an article regarding the update before creating this tutorial, you could read it here.
As you can probably notice, the image inserted on the article was from ZenTalk forum also. Maybe a day after, they pulled out the update and I don’t know the reason why. Or maybe they just mistakenly rolled out a beta update to all ZenFone 2 devices. I think that even the people from ZenTalk PH got confused with this update?

It might take a while, but my phone is now 90% working. (can’t enter recovery and no root access)
